From the Heart of Patagonia to Your Hands
Imagine an endless landscape. Snow-capped mountains, deep fjords, and a stormy sea on the horizon. It's here, along the legendary Carretera Austral in Chilean Patagonia, more than 1,700 kilometers south of Santiago, that four women have started something truly special. They call themselves Friendly Wool, and they want to change how the world views wool.
Four Women with a Shared Mission
Behind Friendly Wool are four dedicated women who share a conviction: that wool is not just a material, but a story. A story about the land it came from, the animals that lived on it, and the hands that worked with it along the way.
In a region where wool production is traditionally mixed with wool from across the country and exported without origin labeling, they decided to break the mold. Their goal is to save the wool's identity — to restore the traceability and dignity it deserves.
Not Just Wool: A Statement
Friendly Wool is certified by Wildlife Friendly, an internationally recognized standard that sets strict requirements for how production impacts nature and wildlife. This means, among other things, that no native predators are killed to protect the herds. Instead, guard dogs are used. Pastures are kept in balance with low animal density, and farmers in the region are fairly compensated for their work.
Each skein carries a fabric tag with the certification mark, intended to be sewn into the finished garment. Sustainability is visible all the way to the final product.
Hands Keeping a Tradition Alive
In the small villages of Guadal, Mallín Grande, and Río Baker, along the southern shore of Lago General Carrera, women spin wool by hand. Just like generations before them. It's a craft at risk of disappearing, and Friendly Wool ensures it doesn't — by purchasing the hand-spun yarn, paying fairly, and telling the stories of the people who create it. Hand-spun wool is limited in volume but rich in character, carrying something that no machine can replicate.
From Shearing to Skein: Every Step Controlled
It's easy to take a skein for granted. But behind every skein from Friendly Wool lies meticulous and careful work. The wool is sorted and selected after shearing, washed and spun under careful supervision — industrially or by hand — and manually finished by the team itself. Each skein is then wound and labeled with complete origin information. The result is a wool you can truly trust.

Why It Matters
When you knit or crochet with Friendly Wool, you contribute to something bigger than a project. You support small-scale sheep farmers in Patagonia, help preserve a living cultural heritage, and choose a wool produced with respect for animals, people, and nature. It's wool with a story worth telling.
