Spinning the Future: The Swedish Wool Revolution
In the heart of Sweden, where meadows stretch out and sheep graze peacefully, a movement is emerging to transform an ancient resource into a modern and sustainable solution: The Swedish Wool Initiative.
An Untapped Treasure
Every year, Sweden produces approximately 1,000 tons of wool. Yet, more than half is discarded or burned – while we import about 1,745 tons of processed wool. This paradox represents both economic loss and missed opportunities for sustainable development and local growth.
Collaboration that Creates Change
Led by Axfoundation and Dalarna Science Park, the initiative brings together over 20 stakeholders – from sheep farmers and shearers to well-known brands like Filippa K, Tiger of Sweden, and Houdini Sportswear. Together, they are working to:
- Establish wool collection centers in strategic locations such as Dalarna.
- Create a national classification system to ensure wool quality.
- Develop innovative products where Swedish wool is the main ingredient.
Innovation and Circular Design
One of the project's major achievements is the development of a Guide for Circular Design, produced by Science Park Borås. The guide provides companies with concrete tools to use Swedish wool sustainably and encourages business models based on reuse and minimal environmental impact.
An Initiative Receiving Recognition
The initiative has already garnered well-deserved attention – in 2023, it was nominated for the Habit Sustainability Award, thanks to its clear strategy for a more sustainable textile industry. Furthermore, the collaboration is now expanding to a Nordic level to strengthen the wool value chain throughout the entire region.
More than just wool: a love for nature
Swedish wool is not just a material; it is a symbol of tradition, quality, and respect for nature. Wool is naturally antibacterial, flame-retardant, and biodegradable, making it an excellent alternative to synthetic materials.
